X-ray flashes from off-axis nonuniform jets

چکیده
It is widely believed that outflows of gamma-ray bursts are jetted. Some people also suggest that the jets may have structures like ǫ(θ) ∝ θ. We test the possibility of X-ray flashes coming from such jets in this paper. Both qualitative and quantitative analyses have shown that this model can reproduce most observational features for both X-ray flashes and gamma-ray bursts. Using common parameters of gamma-ray bursts, we have done both uniform and nonuniform jets’ numerical calculations for their fluxes, spectra and peak energies. It seems that nonuniform jets are more appropriated to these observational properties than uniform ones. We also give a spectrum and flux fit to the most significant X-ray flash, XRF971019 by our model. We also have shown that in our model the observational ratio of gamma-ray bursts to X-ray flashes is about several.

Cosmological X-Ray Flashes from Off-Axis Jets
The 〈V/Vmax〉 of the cosmological X-ray flashes detected by WFC/BeppoSAX is calculated theoretically in a simple jet model. The total emission energy from the jet is assumed to be constant. We find that if the jet opening half-angle is smaller than 0.03 radian, off-axis emission from sources at z≤4 can be seen. The theoretical 〈V/Vmax〉 is less than 0.4, which is consistent with the observational...
متن کاملThe Importance of Off - Axis Beaming in Jet Models
— Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) are widely thought to originate from collimated jets of material moving at relativistic velocities. Emission from such a jet should be visible even when viewed from outside the angle of collimation. Using Monte Carlo population synthesis methods and including the effects of this off-axis beaming, we can compare various GRB jet models against the global properties of ob...
متن کاملA Unified Model of Short and Long Gamma-Ray Bursts, X-Ray Rich Gamma-Ray Bursts, and X-Ray Flashes
Taking into account the recent suggestion that a short gamma-ray burst (GRB) looks like the first 1 sec of a long GRB, we propose that the jet of a GRB consists of multiple sub-jets or sub-shells (i.e., an inhomogeneous jet model). The multiplicity of the sub-jets along a line of sight ns is an important parameter. If ns is large (≫ 1) the event looks like a long GRB, while if ns is small (∼ 1)...
متن کاملRebrightening of XRF 030723: Further Evidence for a Two-Component Jet in Gamma-Ray Burst
Optical afterglows from two-component jets under various configurations are investigated numerically. Generally, the light curve is characterized by a rapid rebrightening when the observer is off-axis with respect to the narrow component, with the amplitude and peak time depending on detailed parameters. We further show that the optical afterglow of XRF 030723, especially its notable and rapid ...
متن کاملProperties of X- Ray Rich Gamma Ray Bursts and X-Ray Flashes
We study the spectrum of the prompt emission and the X-ray and optical afterglow fluxes of X-Ray Rich Gamma Ray Burst (XRRs) and X-Ray Flashes (XRFs). A comparison is then performed with classical Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs). We derive a sample of 54 events XRRs/XRFs observed by BeppoSAX and HETE-2 , by adopting the same hardness spectral ratio for both satellites. We analyze the distribution of th...
